I too was kind of skeptical starting the series because of Battle Royale, but my friend insisted so hard she mailed me the entire series. So there's that. But I'm stoked for the movie too. Instead of dressing up for the premiere I may just hand out cupcakes and/or shoot frosting at people.
Oh my goodness cupcakes. Yes. Okay. This is acceptable.
I enjoyed The Hunger Games! It was very similar to Battle Royale, which honestly has made me a little uneasy about it from the beginning, but I did enjoy it! I'm on to Catching Fire now and am quite happy to not be making comparisons between the two anymore haha.
You know what? I avoided reading it at first because of the Battle Royale element. Someone told me it had very similar parallels and I wasn't really too hot on that. I love the Battle Royale movie, so it was hard to try and read it knowing there may have been heavy influences, bordering on plagiarism. I'm very happy that I was wrong about it though. There are influences, but as you go along its clear the author is doing her own thing with it. Its more based on the old Roman games than anything. Although I suppose the same goes for Battle Royale in some regards.
Yes, there were undeniable parallels between the two. When I first began the book, I found it pretty hard to get into just because all I could do was make comparisons between The Hunger Games and Battle Royale. They're pretty hard to ignore if you know both stories. But personally I found that at about the halfway point of The Hunger Games, or part two, is where the two really diverge. I completely agree with you on the basis from Roman blood sports. Especially in it being used as a form of oppression.
I'm really excited to be on to Catching Fire now. So far it seems like I'll be enjoying it more than the first book.
It almost feels, personally, like the author got really inspired by Battle Royale's ideas and decided to write off of those inspirations. Unfortunately, it shows a bit too much, but hey, at least she didn't pull a Smeyer and just kind of smash a bunch of previous stories together and then throw glitter all over it.
Catching Fire and onwards is so much more gritty and unapologetic. I really enjoyed it.
